Dewey Decimal System
CLASSIFICATION AND ARRANGEMENT OF BOOKS IN THE LIBRARY
The most universally used system of classifying books and arranging them
upon the library shelves was planned by Melvil Dewey. His system is called
the Dewey Decimal System of Classification.
The ten large classes with their numbers are as follows. Numbers after
a whole number further narrows subjects down.
000-099 General works; encyclopedias, periodicals, newspapers,
etc.
(001 -01 9-computers)
100-199 Philosophy; esthetics, psychology, logic, ethics, etc.
200-299 Religion; Bible, Theology, Church, etc.
300-399 Social Sciences; Sociology, economics, law, education,
etc.
400-499 Language; Dictionaries, grammars, readers, etc. (in
all languages)
500-599 Pure Science; Mathematics, astronomy, physics, chemistry,
etc.
(includes dinosaurs, weather, animals, birds, etc.
600-699 Technology; engineering, home economics, business, etc.
(includes electronics, gardening)
700-799 The Arts; sculpture, drawing, painting, music, art,
sports, etc.
800-899 Literature; poems, plays, essays, etc. (in all languages).
900-999 History; Geography, travel, histories of all countries
and all ages. (includes Indians, states, group biographies, US History,
etc.)
B Biographies; Lives of individuals are arranged alphabetically
by the person written about.
F Fiction; grouped on the shelves separately and arranged alphabetically
by the author's surname.
