File a Notice of Intent

In order to register to home school your child/children under this law you must file an intent to home school with the superintendent of schools. The Florida Statutes say:

" the parent or guardian shall notify the superintendent of schools of which the parent or guardian resides of her or his intent to establish and maintain a home education program. The notice shall be in writing, signed by the parent or guardian, and shall include the names, addresses, and birth dates of all children
who shall be enrolled as students in the home education program. The notice shall be filed in the superintendent's office within 30 days of the establishment of the home education program."

Put simply, the notice must:
1. be in writing
2. be signed by parent or guardian
3. contain the names, addresses, and birth dates of children being
    home educated

Keep a copy of this notice for your records. It is recommended that you send this notice, and any other written correspondence, by certified mail, return receipt requested. When you receive the "signed green card", you can then attach it to your copy of the notice as proof that you mailed the intent. (Check with the post office for instructions on how to send certified mail.)

A Note on Age Requirements

In the State of Florida it is mandatory that children between the ages of 6-16 attend an education program (FS 232.01). If your child will be will turn 6 sometime before February 1 of the school year, then you will need to register your intent to home school with the office above.
Also, Citrus County will continue to maintain your child's file from the age 16 until graduation if this is needed for the purpose of dual enrollment in the local community college.
