Benefits

There are many benefits to be gained from the
use of "unit" style learning. This learning style makes use of a
wide variety of God-given opportunities, living books, life experiences,
and practical projects. Below I have listed just some of the benefits
our family has experienced.
-
Unit studies encourage family togetherness and unity. It is wonderful
to have a topic or book in common to discuss with one another.
-
Unit studies can be done with a wide variety of ages.
-
Because knowledge is interrelated it can be learned more easily and retained
longer.
-
Unit studies make use of "real" books from a variety of resources.
Text books only contain a condensed version of information gleaned from
other sources.
-
Unit studies encourage the building of analytical thinking skills.
A student must do more than simply fill in the blanks and remember the
information until the test. They get opportunity to "chew" on the
information and digest it to make it their own.
-
Unit studies provide a great opportunity to practice and refine reading,
writing, and research skills.
-
Unit studies make use of the three main types of motivation:
-
internally motivated by a love of something
-
someone elses love of something is transfered to the student (mom, friend,
etc.)
-
willing to do something difficult or boring in order to reach a specific
goal (or bribe)
-
Unit studies promote a love for reading and learning for a life time.
-
Subjects learned through unit studies are seen as a whole instead of bits
and pieces scattered throughout the educational experience.
