Types

   There are many different types of unit study materials available to home educators.  Many prefer creating their own units.  The amount of time, money, and resources you have, combined with the goals you have set for your family and your children, will determine the type of  unit study you will want  to use.
    Below I have listed some of the different types of material available and have included examples of each type:
  • Pre-planned
    • This type of study is prepared completely for you.  They can be character or topic or historically based. Most of the research and planning has been done for you with these curriculums.
    • ALTA VISTA is divided into five topics each year: plants, animals, earth and space, man-as-individual, and man and his community.
    • KONOS is a character based study.  This curriculum can be used with their lesson plans or you can make your own.  They also now offer a highschool unit study curriculum with a world history focus.
    • WEAVER uses a chronilogical study of the Bible as its central theme.
    • FAR ABOVE RUBIES is a highschool unit studies course which is designed to prepare young girls to become Godly women according to Proverbs 31.
    • BLESSED IS THE MAN is the young mans version of Far Above Rubies.  It is designed for high school.
  • Topical
    • Amanda Bennet is the author of unit study guides which cover a wide variety of topics.  Oceans, Space, Flight, and Trains were written for K-8.  Computers, Home, Gardens, Electricity, Olympics, and Baseball cover K-12 grade levels.

    • Night Owl Creations carries units on weather, inventions, energy, marine life, first aid & safety, wilderness survival, ancient Greece, ancient Rome, explorers, holidays, the arts, Europe, australia, and Colonial America.  Call them for a brochure at  (352) 242-9842
  • Historical
    • Greenleaf Press  has created unit study guides for most historical periods based on the famous men of the times.  Their catalog is full of wonderful books great for immersed study in a specific time period.
    • Weaver (see above)
  • Scientific
    • Media Angels are the creators and suppliers of a variety of science unit study guides which are creation based.  Topics include geology , astronomy, creation science, and anatomy.
    • Censured Science carries a wide variety of creation science books.  Katie Frates does seminars and classes for students of all ages.  Call (352) 528-2255 for a catalog or more information.

    • Beautiful Feet creators of a variety of literature based (historically focused units)
    • Five in a Row   literature-based unit study for children ages 2 through 12!
  • Geographical
    • Beautiful Feet creators of a unit study about the geography of the America's based on the classic Hollings C. Hollings books.
